Snowman: One morning Jem and Scout woke up to see snow outside. They ran outside to play with the snow but it was soggy. They started to make a snowman but ran out of snow. They ran all the way over to Ms.Maudie's to see if they could have some of her snow. All that snow wasn’t enough for a complete snowman, so Jem added some dirt to the snowman. Scout makes a comment on page 89 saying, “Jem I ain’t ever heard of a nigger snowman.” This symbolizes multiple things. One could be racism and how it’s a disease. The second one could be how white people essentially need the black people but don’t admit it.
Mrs. Maudie’s garden: Mrs. Maudie’s garden in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird is an example of symbolism. Mrs. Maudie has different types of flowers and plants in her garden but she specifically didn’t like one kind. The nut grass. On page 56 it quotes,” Why, one sprig of nut grass can ruin a whole yard. Look here. When it comes fall this dries up and the wind blows it all over Maycomb County!”. This symbolizes how Mrs. Maudie is racist and the nut grass represents black people. Mrs. Maudie would cut off the roots of the nut grass to make sure they never grow back. Furthermore, Mrs. Maudie’s garden symbolized racism with how she treated her plants.
Mockingbird: The mockingbirds in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird represents the peace and happiness in Maycomb. On page 119 it says, ”Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird”. This shows how the mockingbirds would always sing for the people in Maycomb, and make peace for others. This also shows how everyone loved the mockingbirds so much that they made it a sin to kill them. They didn’t want to kill them because they did not harm others in any way, so there was no point in killing them. They would always bring joy to others since they would sing a song for people.
Closed doors: Closed doors in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird means that there is ̈illness and cold weather.̈In the book Boo Radley has closed doors, but this is because he doesn't want to get involved in the racism in Maycomb. On page 11, ̈The shutters and doors of the Radley house were closed on Sundays, another things aliem Maycombś ways: closed doors meant illness and cold weather only. This symbolizes that Boo radleyś doors are closed every Sunday, so he can’t be ill because it doesn't happen where you randomly get sick every Sunday. This is why the closed doors in To Kill a Mockingbird is symbolism. The Gun and Mad Dog: The gun symbolizes safety for jem and scout. They live in such a racist town that there is closed doors everywhere you turn around. The gun is meant to protect and keep safe for loved ones. The rifle that Atticus Finch had represented his strengths and how he was able to protect his family. The mad dog represents racism. In chapter 10 it states, “ the dog is Just as dangerous as alive.” This proves that the racism in maycomb is sky high. If Atticus Finch had the guts to kill the mad dog he would be willing to take on Tom Robinson’s case. The mad dog represents how Atticus Finch feels to have his whole town against him to defend and African American in a trial.
