ATTICUS: Atticus is a fifty year old white male lawyer, from the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." Atticus Finch is a trustworthy lawyer and does not approve of racism. On page 296 Atticus states,"There's nothing more sickening to me than a low-grade white man who'll take advantage of a negro's ignorance. Don’t fool yourselves- it’s all adding up and one of these days we’re going to pay the bill for it. I hope it’s not in your children’s time.” This quote is referring that the bad things people do will always come back to them. In the novel Atticus Finch is defending an African American male named Tom Robinson. Tom has been charged with rape of a white female. According to Tom and Atticus’s evidence, this is all a lie and it is up to juries to decide who is guilty. Therefore, this trial is against a white and black person there is no chance of Tom winning.

JEM: Jem Finch is a 10 or so year old boy, who is siblings with Scout Finch, and a son to Atticus Finch. Jem is a very adventurous person, who is best friends with Dill. Him and Dill like to go out and walk around Maycomb. While they walk around, they sometimes encounter Boo Radley, who is a man who never goes outdoors. Jem had once said, "our lives can change so fast that the change outpaces our minds and hearts. It's those times, I think, when our lives have altered but we still long for the time before everything was altered-- that is when we feel the greatest pain. I can tell you, though, from experience, you grow accustomed to it. You learn to live your new life, and you can't imagine, or even really remember, how things were before.” By reading this quote we can tell how Jem is a very serious and smart person for only being 10 years old.

MS.MAUDIE: Ms. Maudie is the Finches neighbor who likes to bake cakes for Jem and Scout. She seems to be a gentle and pleasant lady, but is she? To some she’s known as a chameleon lady or in simpler words two faced. She’s very figurative as seen on page 56 when she says, “Why, one sprig of nut grass can ruin a whole yard. Look here. When it comes fall this dries up and the wind blows it all over Maycomb County!” She likes to say things in a non literal way and she uses a lot of symbolism. She’s really mysterious and controversial but doesn’t like to get involved in anything. She doesn’t like racism and has her own opinions but doesn’t like to share them. From what we know Ms. Maudie is a polite person in the eyes of others but she might have a secret side we don’t know of. |
SCOUT: Scout is a six year old tomboy who lives with her father Atticus, brother Jem, and aunt Alexandra. She is very curious about Maycomb and racism. Scout enjoys playing with Jem and Dill and also reading. People like aunt Alexandra believe that Scout should be more ladylike, so she tries her hardest to make her more feminine, but Scout likes to be herself and dress how she chooses. Towards the end of the book Scout is becoming a bit more ladylike. On page 307 Aunt Alexandra says, “This was a part of her campaign to teach me to be a lady.¨ This shows how Scout is a tomboy and does not act as much of a lady as aunt Alexandra would like her too. Towards the end aunt Alexandra get Scout to become more feminine. Scouts father Atticus does not care if Scout is a tomboy, so all of her life she has been a tomboy and not told to be anything different.
