Chaos in the 1930’s
Elie Wiesel, an American writer once stated, “No human race is superior; no religious faith is inferior. All collective judgement is wrong. Only racists make them.” This quote explains how everyone is equal, and no one is better than another. Some tragic events that happened in the 1930’s were, murders, crimes, and the Great Depression. In the 1930’s, there were many disasters that harmed everyone.
To start off, the K.K.K (Ku Klux Klan), in the 1930’s were causing many problems for thousands of people. For example, www.history.com explained how crime rates have risen during the Great Depression. In 1933, crimes had a very high rate for the century at 9.7 per 100,000 people. As the economy showed signs of recovery in 1934-1937, the rate went down by 20 percent (1). This quote tells us how in the 1930’s crime rates have been going up, but slowly started to die down as the years kept on passing by. The KKK had caused many crimes such as robbing, murdering, and more.
According to www.splcenter.org, ”For many years the KKK quite literally could get away with murder. The K.K.K was an instrument of fear, and black people, Jews and even white civil rights workers knew that the fear was intended to control us, to keep things as they had been in the South through slavery, and after that ended, through Jim Crow. This fear of the Klan was very real because, for a long time, the Klan had the power of Southern society on its side”(1). This quote points out how the KKK would be doing many horrible crimes, and no one would know about them. From this quote, we also learned how the KKK were also very racist.
Following, the KKK had also committed many murders. According to www.essence.com it states, ”Between 21 and 200 Black people were murdered after residents began rioting when a Black man was accused of raping a White woman. Tulsa KKK founder W. Tate Brady participated in the riot'' (2). From reading this quote, this illustrates how the KKK did not like people that were not like them. They only liked those that were Catholic or twins, and thought that blacks needed to be killed. If someone doesn't respect what the KKK did, or mocked them, in a snap of a second they would be dead. In all, this quote shows how the KKK were very racist in different ways.
Furthermore, the Great Depression had caused racism and discriminating for black people. Based off of www.njstatelib.org, the reasons for black suffering during the Great Depression are because discrimination. Black unemployment was also supported by the racist attitude that whites should not be without work, while blacks were to work. Wages for blacks were about 30 percent less than whites. This caused African Americans to experience the Great Depression in harsher terms than whites. This connects back to racism in the 1930’s because whites had better opportunities than blacks, such as jobs, money, and more. Many blacks wouldn’t be able to work at all just because of their skin tone (1). This was very unfair treatment for all African Americans, since half of them were treated poorly. To sum it up, African Americans should not be treated differently just because they have a different skin tone.
In conclusion, in the 1930’s there were many disasters that harmed everyone. Some events that took place were, murders, crimes, and the Great Depression. In addition, many African Americans were to stay at home and not be able to work, because of their skin color. The KKK would take over the world, killing thousands. Their were also many crimes from stealing, breaking into houses, and more. This led to breakouts in fights, and even riots since there was unfair treatment. All in all, the 1930’s was definitely a rough time period for everyone.
