The Craziness of the 1930s
Hindenburg Disaster Newsreel Footage Quotes once reported, “It’s crashing terrible! Oh, my! Get out of the way. Please! Its burning, bursting into flames and falling out on the mooring mast, and all the folks agree that this is terrible. This is the worst of the worst catastrophes in the world!” This explains that this reporter was really there, witnessing how bad the Hindenburg Explosion really was. Some devastating events that also happened during the 1930s were disasters, crashes, and explosions. Therefore, the 1930s had many tragic events that affected America.
To start, there were many disasters that occurred in the 1930s. For example, Droughts, Tornados, Blizzards and Floods all in the 1930s stated, “In May 1935, the Republican River valley received several days of heavy rain. The river rose quickly to flood stage. People who had survived years of drought couldn't believe what was happening and scrambled to rooftops for safety. A wall of water, trees, and debris hit the town of Red Cloud. When it was over, more than 100 people had been killed.”(p.1) This indicates disaster because all of the rain caused over 100 people to die. They couldn’t get to safety because of all the rain. After this disaster many people’s family and friends had died from the flood. This might not have happened if they were prepared for the flood and had all the supplies they needed.
Furthermore, Delaney White from, “NATURAL DISASTERS IN THE 1930s’’ states, “The 1930 Meuse Valley fog killed 60 people in Belgium due to a combination of industrial air pollution and climatic conditions in December that year.’’(p.1) This is a disaster because it killed 60 people due to the combination of air that was not supposed to be combined with each other. This could have never happened if someone had realized that this was going to happen, and now 60 people have died from this.
Next, in the 1930s there were many crashes that affected America today. For example, according to, List of accidents and incidents involving commercial aircraft, “March 21 1931 – An Australian National Airways Avro 618 Ten, Southern Cloud, disappears in severe weather on a flight from Sydney to Melbourne, killing all eight on board in Australia's first significant airline disaster; the crash site in the Snowy Mountains remains undiscovered until 1958.”(p.1) This testifies that this plane crashed into the snowy mountains. It killed everyone on the flight. This is very bad because these types of things happen all the time today, and a lot of people lost their loved ones on this day. This is just one example of the many crashes that happened in the 1930s that affected America today.
Another example of a bad crash that has affected the lives in America today is from Astonishing Photos of Car Wrecks in the 1930s. They stated, “March 31 – A Transcontinental & Western Air Fokker F-10 Trimotor crashes near Bazaar, Kansas, after a wing breaks off in flight, killing all eight aboard, including University of Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne.”(p.1) This quote emphasizes that this crash killed all eight people aboard, this is bad because it means that eight sets of families and friends have lost a loved one. It even killed a football coach, which means that his whole team had to feel the pain of losing a special person to them. Crashes are very bad back then and now, and are still to this day very popular.
Lastly, in the 1930s explosions were also something that happened that we couldn’t prevent from occuring. For example, "List of Historic Explosions - Atex Explosion Hazards,́ ́ says, In the 1930s, 13 people were killed and 32 were severely injured when part of the Hickson and Welch factory exploded. The explosion left 300 houses nearby unable to be lived in. This quote proves that there was an explosion that killed 13 people and injured 32. This explosion affected America because it left people upset.
To conclude, in the 1930s there were many tragic events that affected America today. Some include disasters, crashes, and explosions. There has always been terrible things that have happened in the 1930s and now that will always happen. We will always have accidents like these in our lives.
